Sustainable data centers

Our data centers are designed to reduce environmental impact through a range of measures, including excess heat recovery, efficient energy use, low water consumption, renewable electricity and emissions management.

⁨⁨
Excess heat recovery
GlobalConnect recovers heat generated by IT equipment at selected data centers and supplies it to local district-heating networks. The recovered heat can then be reused to heat homes and businesses in the surrounding community. Heat recovery is in operation at data centers in Denmark, Norway and Sweden.
⁨⁨
Energy usage
We continuously optimize our data center operations to reduce energy consumption. This includes improving the efficiency of existing infrastructure, decommission and phase out of legacy network equipment and designing new expansions for improved PUE.
⁨⁨
Water usage
Our data centers are designed with closed-loop cooling systems and have very low water consumption compared with conventional cooling tower technologies. Water use is considered when designing and operating each site. This helps us provide reliable cooling while limiting the impact on local water resources.

Sustainable data centers

⁨⁨
Energy sourcing
GlobalConnect uses 100% renewable electricity across its operations, including its network and data centers. This supports lower-carbon data center operations and helps customers host their IT equipment in a more energy-efficient environment.

Since 2020, we have procured renewable energy equivalent to 100% of the electricity consumed across our data centers and sites, including electricity consumed by our customers. The Energy Attribute Certificates meet RE100 technical criteria and ensure that the energy is produced in the countries where it is consumed.
⁨⁨
Emissions
We reduce emissions from our data center operations by sourcing renewable electricity, improving energy efficiency and managing emissions from backup generators and refrigerants.

For future expansions, we are continuously investigating lower-emission fuels for backup generators, refrigerants with lower global-warming potential and ways to reduce embodied carbon in equipment, materials and construction.

Flexible cooling for evolving IT demands

AI, GPUs and other processor-intensive applications place high demands on data center cooling capacity. GlobalConnect therefore offers several high-performance cooling options that can be adapted to the equipment’s requirements and power density:

  • Traditional air cooling
  • Rear-door heat exchangers
  • Direct liquid cooling
  • Immersion cooling

This provides a flexible data center environment capable of supporting both today’s IT infrastructure and future requirements for more data- and processor-intensive applications.

Frequently asked questions about colocation

A colocation data center is a professionally operated facility where businesses can host their own IT equipment. GlobalConnect manages the data center environment, including physical security, power and cooling, while you retain ownership and control of your equipment.
